Follow the steps below to download your grades from Kritik and import them into Canvas.
Step 1: Download your Gradebook from Kritik
Open your Kritik course and go to Course Info
Click More Actions in the top-right corner
Select Download Gradebook
Open the downloaded spreadsheet
Choose the Overall (completed activities) tab for overall grades, or an individual activity tab to export grades for a specific activity.
For more details, see our guide on The Gradebook.
Step 2: Match your students and grades
Canvas uses student record IDs to match grades during CSV imports. You must match the students in your Canvas gradebook with your Kritik data before uploading.
In Canvas, open your course and go to Grades → Export (Current Gradebook View) to download your existing Canvas gradebook as a CSV file
Export a student roster from Canvas Analytics that contains both student email addresses and Canvas student record IDs
Click 'Grades'
Click 'Export'
Select 'Current Gradebook View'
3. Open both files in Excel (or another spreadsheet application) and use VLOOKUP or an equivalent lookup function to match the Canvas student IDs with the email addresses on your roster
Note: See the linked VLOOKUP guide above for a video walkthrough.
4. Use those matched email addresses to align the students with their corresponding grades in your Kritik gradebook
5. Copy the Kritik grades into the appropriate assignment column within your Canvas CSV file
Important Checklist Before Continuing:
Verify that the grades accurately match the correct student rows
Do not change or edit the original Canvas student IDs
Leave existing Canvas assignment column headers completely unchanged
Note: If you can't access a Canvas roster containing both student IDs and email addresses, please contact your institution's Canvas administrator for assistance.
For visual references, see Canvas's official guide: How do I export grades in the Gradebook?
Step 3: Import your grades into Canvas
Save your completed spreadsheet as a CSV file (ensuring it is saved in UTF-8 format if names contain special characters)
In Canvas, use the Course Navigation menu to Click Grades
Click the Import button
Click Choose File (or Browse), select your updated CSV file, and click Open
Click Upload Data
Review the import preview page. If you are creating a brand new column, select A new assignment and enter the Points Possible when prompted, then click Continue
Review your final changes and click Save Changes
Return to your Canvas gradebook to confirm that the grades display correctly
Tip: If anything looks incorrect on the import preview screen, click cancel, review your spreadsheet formatting, and try the upload again.
For visual references, see Canvas's official guide: How do I import grades in the Gradebook?
Using another LMS?
If your institution uses a different learning management system, you can still import your Kritik CSV gradebook. Because formatting constraints vary strictly by platform, please review the required identifiers and setup rules below:
Blackboard Learn:
Step 1: Download Gradebooks
Download your Kritik CSV gradebook
Go to your Blackboard Gradebook → Settings → Upload and download gradebook and download your current gradebook as a CSV (This retains Blackboard's required system-generated Column IDs)
Step 2: Format CSV
Match students using their Blackboard Username. Copy your Kritik grades into the assignment column
Creating a new column? Add a new header without a Column ID, and ensure at least one student has a grade entered.
Step 3: Upload & Confirm
Go to Gradebook Settings → Upload Gradebook, attach your file, review the preview panel, and click Upload
For step-by-step visual instructions, refer to the Blackboard Help: Upload a File to Gradebook guide.
D2L Brightspace:
Step 1: Download & Format CSV
Download your Kritik CSV gradebook
Ensure your student identifier column uses either Username or OrgDefinedID (Student ID)
Format your grade column header as [Assignment Name] Points Grade (e.g. Kritik Assignment Points Grade)
Updating an existing column? The [Assignment Name] portion must match your existing Brightspace grade item name exactly.
Add an End-of-Line Indicator column as the final column on the far right and enter # in every student row
Step 2: Upload CSV
Go to your Brightspace course, open Grades → Enter Grades, and click Import
Click Choose File, select your formatted CSV file, and click Continue
Creating a new column? Check the box for Create new grade item when an unrecognized item is referenced
Step 3: Map & Review
Set properties for any new grade items (such as Category and Maximum Points) and click Continue
Review any errors or warnings on the preview page, then click Import
For step-by-step visual instructions, refer to the Brightspace Community: Importing Grades documentation.
Moodle:
Step 1: Export & Format CSV
Download your Kritik CSV gradebook
(Recommended) In your Moodle gradebook, select Export → CSV file from the dropdown menu to obtain a template with your course's exact column headers
Copy your Kritik grades into the corresponding assignment column in your CSV, ensuring student rows include their Username, Email Address, or ID Number
Step 2: Upload CSV
Open your Moodle course gradebook, select Import → CSV file from the gradebook dropdown menu
Choose your updated CSV file and click Upload grades
Step 3: Map Identifiers & Import
Scroll down to the Identify user by section on the preview page:
Set Map from to your CSV identifier (Email Address, Username, or ID Number)
Set Map to to the corresponding Moodle field (useremail, username, or useridnumber)
Under Grade item mappings, map your Kritik assignment column header to your target Moodle grade item
Click Upload grades at the bottom of the page to complete the import
For step-by-step visual instructions, refer to the MoodleDocs: Grade Import portal.
