New Writing Authorship Formatting Options
The Writing Authorship editor now includes formatting options to help students structure their assignments according to APA 7 or MLA writing standards.
Instructors can select a writing standard for their activity, and students can use the formatting tools available in the Writing Authorship editor to format their work.
The available writing standards are:
APA — automatically aligns the editor with APA 7 writing standards.
MLA — automatically aligns the editor with MLA writing standards.
Unspecified — provides the original Writing Authorship editor experience without alignment to a specific writing standard.
Note: APA is selected by default
The selected writing standard affects the documents:
Page margin
Page numbers
Headers and footers
The Writing Authorship editor includes new tools for:
Adding a table of contents
Working with pages and page numbers
Customizing page margins
Adding page breaks
Adding headers and footers
Adding hanging indents
How to Select a Writing Standard
Instructors can select the writing standard for an activity in Activity Settings.
Step 1: Navigate to your activity
Navigate to your course and select Activities from the left taskbar.
Create a new activity or select Edit Activity for an existing activity.
Continue to the Rubric & Settings section and scroll down to Settings.
Step 2: Select a Writing Standard
In the Create Stage settings, locate Writing Standard.
You can select:
APA
MLA
Unspecified
The selected option will be highlighted in pink.
Note: APA is selected by default.

Does selecting APA or MLA automatically format the entire activity?
The selected writing standard configures the relevant page layout elements, including margins, headers and footers, and page numbers. Students are still responsible for following their instructor's assignment requirements and formatting their content appropriately.
