How It Works
Once you open an activity, you can use the built-in formatting tools in the Writing Authorship editor to structure your activity according to your instructor's requirements.
Note: The editor's toolbar is scrollable.
Add Headers and Footers
The Writing Authorship editor supports both headers and footers.
Steps
Double-click the header or footer area of the page.
Enter your text.
If needed, re-align the header or footer by clicking Align & Indent in the toolbar and selecting the desired alignment (default is set to Left Align).
Note: Headers and footers will automatically be formatted based on the Writing Standard (APA, MLA, Unspecified) selected by your instructor.

Add a Table of Contents
You can add a Table of Contents to your document to organize longer activities. The Table of Contents uses the headings in your document to create its structure.
Steps
Add headings before adding a Table of Contents.
Click Styles in the editor toolbar (default is set to Normal).
Select Heading 1 from Styles.
A Table of Contents will appear at the top of the editor.
Note: Use headings in your document to ensure your sections are included in the Table of Contents.
Page Numbers
The Writing Authorship editor displays your work as a paginated document, allowing you to see how your content is structured across individual pages as you write.
Page numbers are automatically formatted based on the writing standard (APA, MLA, or Unspecified) set by your instructor.
Note: When the Writing Standard is set to MLA or APA, the header automatically formats: Last Name, Page Number.
Customize Page Margins
You can adjust document page margins using the editor layout controls.
Steps
Open your activity in the Writing Authorship editor.
Locate the page margin controls on the ruler located at the top and left side of the editor.
Drag the blue arrow to set margins to your desired position.
Note: If your instructor has selected APA or MLA as the Writing Standard, the margins in the editor are pre-configured to align with that standard. Always follow any additional formatting instructions provided by your instructor.
Add a Page Break
You can insert a page break when you want content to begin on a new page.
Steps
Place your cursor where you want the new page to begin.
Note: Anything after your cursor will automatically move to the next page.
Click Insert in the toolbar.
Select Page Break.
Add a Hanging Indent
Hanging indents are typically used when formatting References and Works Cited.
Steps
Enter your text in the Writing Authorship editor.
Highlight your desired text.
Click "Align & Indent" in the toolbar.
Select Hanging Indent.
Understanding Writing Standards (APA, MLA, or Unspecified)
The writing standard selected by the instructor determines how the Writing Authorship editor is automatically formatted.

The editor is aligned with MLA formatting.
Unspecified
The editor uses the original Writing Authorship experience without alignment to a specific writing standard.
Note: The writing standard controls the editor's formatting and page layout. Students should always follow any additional formatting requirements included in their activity instructions.
