Types of Group Activities

There are two types of activities that can be set up with groups: Between-Group and Within-Group.

Between-Group is a standard group activity where students work together in creating one submission for the Create stage. In the Evaluate stage, evaluations of each group’s work will be completed individually by students. Students will be assigned to evaluate submissions from peer groups other than their own. In this group activity type, this shared creations will be submitted by group leaders.

The following shows what the Create submission stage looks like in this activity type for both group leaders (first screenshot) and remaining group mates, or non-leaders (second screenshot).

Note: this activity's evaluation process will be anonymous. Students will not be able to see the members of the group whose work they are evaluating.

Within-Group is where each student individually submits their own work for the Creation stage. In the Evaluate stage, students will evaluate each other’s work within their group. The following screenshot shows that the Create submission stage looks like in this activity type for all group members.

Note: this activity's evaluation process will not be anonymous. Students will be able to see which group member's work they are evaluating, but the evaluations given will be anonymous in the Feedback stage.

How to View Group Members and Leaders

After an instructor has created groups for their course activity, students must look for their group mates and leader on Kritik before starting to work on an activity. This can be located on the right hand side of the screen, as shown below. To get to this page, students must click on the group activity in question, minimize the rubric pop-up on the right hand side, and view their group members and leader, located under the activity schedule.

It is important to check group status for each and every activity, as it is possible for an instructor to change group sets between activities across a single course.

It is important to note that keeping in mind the group leader is essential for students participating in a Between-Group activity. For this activity type, students work together in creating one submission for the Create stage, and this work can only be submitted by group leaders.

How to Change Group Leaders

If students wish to make a request for group leadership change for any reason, they can do so by contacting their instructor or Kritik Support through the Live Chat. It is important to make such requests as soon as possible in time sensitive situations, such as instances in which group leaders may be unresponsive in light of an upcoming Create deadline for a Between-Group activity. The sooner students reach out to their instructors or Support for assistance, the sooner such changes can be made ahead of a deadline.
