Creating a Presentation Activity

How to Create a Presentation Activity

To create a presentation activity simply select the “Live Presentation” activity type.

The Difference Between Individual and Group Presentations

There are two varieties of presentation activities, Individual and Group presentations. Below are the key differences between the two types:

Individual Presentations:

  • Every presenter is evaluated independently. There is one submission per student

  • When choosing which students to participate in the Evaluate stage, instructors have the following 3 options:

    • Specific students to participate in the evaluate stage

    • All students to participate in the evaluate stage

      • With this option, all students will be evaluating Creations (except their own).

    • All students except the presenters to participate in the evaluate stage.

      • With this option, individuals who have participated in the Create stage will not be evaluating any presentations. Students evaluating will be evaluating every student participating in the Create stage.

Group Presentations:

  • Each student group is evaluated independently. There is one submission per student group

  • When choosing which students to participate in the Evaluate stage, instructors have the following 2 options:

    • All students to participate in the evaluate stage

      • With this option, all groups will be evaluating Creations (except their own).

    • All students except the presenters to participate in the evaluate stage

      • With this option, groups who have participated in the Create stage will not be evaluating any presentations. Students evaluating will be evaluating every group participating in the Create stage.

How the Feedback stage works in a presentation activity

In both Individual and Group Presentations, everyone except students in Create stage will be assigned evaluations to provide feedback on. In other words, evaluators will provide feedback on each other's evaluations. This minimizes evaluation bias and to ensure that all students are assigned a proportionate amount of Feedbacks. In both activity types, all evaluations are evenly distributed amongst the students participating in the feedback stage. See below examples of how this equal distribution would work in Individual and Group presentations.

Individual Presentation:

  • Activity with 5 presenters, 25 students total in the class

  • Total students participating = 25

  • Since students will not evaluate their own presentations, it will be 20 total evaluations per presentation.

  • A total of 100 evaluations (5 presentations x 20 evaluations = 100 evaluations)

  • Each student will get 4 evaluations assigned (100 / 25 students)

  • This means, assuming that all students complete all the evaluations, each student could get a maximum of 4 feedbacks assigned.

Group Presentation:

  • Activity with 10 groups, 2 students per group

  • Total students participating = 20

  • Since students will not evaluate their own presentations it will be 18 total evaluations per presentation.

  • A total of 180 evaluations (10 presentations x 18 evaluations = 180 evaluations)

  • Each student will get 9 evaluations assigned (180/ 20 students)

  • This means, assuming that all students complete all the evaluations, each student could get a maximum of 9 feedbacks assigned.

How to edit the settings for a presentation activity

To make presentation activities easier to create, we set a few default settings. However, instructors looking to customize their presentation activities can easily update the activity settings to accommodate their specific use cases.

How to make presentation attachments required for students

By default, presentation attachments are optional for students. This means that students that did not submit an attachment can still have their presentations evaluated by their peers. If that setting is changed to required, then students that missed an attachment would not have any evaluators assigned to their presentation.

Scheduling a Presentation Activity

How to schedule multiple presentations within one presentation activity

With the beta version of presentation activities, instructors can select the students or groups that will present in a given presentation session. In most cases, this will be during a live class. A separate presentation activity would need to be created for students that are going to be presenting in another session.

How to schedule multiple presentations in your course

A unique presentation activity would need to be created for each presentation session. Multiple students (or student groups) could present in a given session. However, a unique presentation activity would need to be created for separate presentation sessions.

For example, if there are two classes, one on Tuesday and another on Thursday, two activities would need to be created: one for the Tuesday session and another for the Thursday one.

Live Presentations

How will students know when they are required to present?

Students that are scheduled to present will see a “Present” icon in their view of the activity card. When in the “Present” stage, the timestamp on the top right corner of the card will indicate when the “Present” stage starts and when it ends.

How will students know when/who they need to evaluate?

Unlike other Kritik activity types, presenters in presentation activities are not anonymous to evaluators. This means that evaluators are aware of which specific students or group to evaluate.

In presentation activities, the “Present” and “Evaluate” stages happen simultaneously. This is to ensure that evaluators can give just-in-time feedback to presenters during a live presentation.

In presentation activities do creators provide Feedback to their evaluators?

Unlike other Kritik activity types where creators provide feedback to their peer evaluators in the Feedback stage, in presentation activities evaluators provide Feedback on the quality of the evaluations of their peers.

This is done to minimize evaluation bias and to ensure that all students are assigned a proportionate amount of Feedbacks.

What to do if a presenter or a group cannot make (misses) the live presentation?

If a student or group misses the presentation date prior to the Present/Evaluate stage, the instructor would need to edit the activity participation and remove the student or group that will not be present. This will ensure that the students that missed the date does not get evaluators assigned.

If the instructor becomes aware of the students missing the live presentation during the Present/Evaluate stage, the best course of action is to instruct the evaluators to mark that presentation as 0 across the rubric criteria. Unfortunately, currently there is no way for instructors to easily reschedule a presentation. As a workaround, the instructor would then need to create a new Presentation Activity for those students that missed the initial presentation date for another time. This would result in those students having two creation scores for two different presentation activities in the gradebook - which would need to be manually adjusted to account for the missed presentation.

Grading

Are presentation activity grades incorporated into the overall score?

No, in the Beta release of presentation activities, presentation grades will not be included in the calculation of the overall grade for the course.

Presentation activities are different from typical activities because in those activities some students can participate in some stages but not all stages. For that reason, combining those activities with activities where students completed every stage would skew the overall grade and could cause confusion for students.

In Presentation activities, when some students participate in the Create stage and not other stages, their activity overall grade will be more heavily weighted towards the stages that they did participate in. In a typical scenario where creators presented (but not evaluated) in one activity and evaluated and completed Feedback in another activity, the activity stage scores would have different weights. In the activity where the students participated in the Create stage, the Create stage score would count for the overall grade for that activity. In the activity where the students participated in the Evaluate and Feedback stages, the average of the scores for those stages would be the overall grade. This means that for a presentation activity if a Create stage weighs differently than evaluate/feedback stage (for example, 70% Create/ 20% Evaluate/ 10% Feedback), then if we simply take the final grade into the overall average calculation, the activity would weigh the same for presenter and evaluators, when in fact, the presenters did 70% worth of that activity, but the evaluators only did 30%.

This is different from a student that participated in all 3 stages of an activity where the student's overall score would follow the scoring weight schema for the course.

Will presentation activity grades appear in the gradebook?

Yes, Presentation activities will appear in the gradebook. However, they will not be included in the calculation for the overall course grade.

If a student did not present, how is their Creation score calculated?

The student will receive a score in the gradebooks for the stages where the student has participated. However, for activity stages in which the student did not participate, the student will not receive a score in the gradebook, instead, we will show “not participated”.
